The transport of construction materials is a key element of any construction project. The efficiency and safety of this process largely depend on the choice of the appropriate trailer. In the road transport industry in Europe, there are many types of trailers, each characterised by specific properties, perfectly suited for the transport of specific types of construction loads. In this article, we will take a closer look at the most commonly used trailers in the transport of construction materials.

1. Flatbed trailers (also known as "curtainsider")

Flatbed trailers are among the most versatile types of trailers. Their construction, consisting of a flat loading platform, often equipped with sides and the option to cover with a tarpaulin, makes them ideal for transporting a wide range of construction materials. We can transport, among others:

  • Steel: reinforcement bars, steel profiles, sheets.

  • Wood: timber, boards, beams, OSB boards.

  • Insulation materials: mineral wool, polystyrene (often protected from weather conditions).

  • Pallets of materials: bricks, concrete blocks, hollow blocks, bags of cement, adhesive, etc.

Advantages: versatility, ease of loading and unloading from various sides, possibility of securing the load with a tarpaulin.

2. Curtainsider trailers (also known as "curtains")

Curtainsider trailers are a modification of flatbed trailers, where the sides and often the roof are made of sliding curtains. This allows for very quick loading and unloading from the side, which is particularly useful in logistics centres and on construction sites with limited space. They are ideal for transporting:

  • Palletised materials: bricks, blocks, cement, adhesives, paints.

  • Prefabricated elements: smaller concrete and steel elements.

  • Goods requiring protection from weather conditions.

Advantages: quick and easy access to the load from the side, protection against rain and wind.

3. Tippers

Tippers are trailers designed for the transport of bulk materials. Their characteristic feature is the ability to self-unload by raising the loading box. In the transport of construction materials, tippers are indispensable for transporting:

  • Aggregates: sand, gravel, stone, crushed stone.

  • Soil and rubble: during earthworks and demolition.

  • Other bulk materials: loose cement, lime.

Advantages: quick and efficient unloading without the need for additional equipment.

4. Low-loader trailers

Although they are not directly used for transporting standard construction materials, low-loader trailers are essential on construction sites for transporting heavy equipment and construction machines, such as:

  • Excavators

  • Bulldozers

  • Cranes

  • Other oversized and heavy machines.

Advantages: the ability to transport loads of large dimensions and weight.

5. Specialized trailers

Depending on the characteristics of the transported construction materials, other, more specialized types of trailers may also be used. Examples include trailers for transporting concrete (concrete mixers) or trailers for transporting prefabricated elements with unusual shapes and sizes.
