At SKAT Transport, we understand that road transport is not just about moving goods from point A to point B. Particularly in the case of delicate products, safety and the protection of the cargo at every stage of the journey play a crucial role. Whether we are transporting glass, electronics, or other sensitive items, our priority is to deliver them to their destination in pristine condition.

In this article, we will look at the basic principles of protecting delicate products during road transport that we apply and that every entrepreneur should consider to minimise the risk of damage.

What do we mean by delicate products?

Delicate products are those that are susceptible to mechanical damage, vibrations, shocks, temperature fluctuations, or humidity. These can include:

  • Glass and ceramic products

  • Electronics and precision equipment

  • Works of art and antiques

  • Musical instruments

  • Some food products (e.g. fruits, vegetables)

  • Construction elements requiring special care

Key challenges in transporting delicate products

Road transport involves natural challenges that can pose a threat to delicate cargo:

  • Vibrations and shocks: while driving on uneven roads, as well as during loading and unloading, goods are exposed to vibrations and shocks, which can lead to cracks, scratches, or other damage.

  • Sudden braking and acceleration: unforeseen situations on the road may necessitate sudden maneuvers that cause the cargo to shift inside the vehicle.

  • Temperature and humidity changes: depending on the season and weather conditions, significant fluctuations in temperature and humidity may occur inside the trailer, which can negatively affect some delicate products.

  • Improper securing of the cargo: incorrect or inadequate securing of the cargo can result in its shifting, leading to damage.

Basic principles of protecting delicate products

In order to effectively protect delicate products during road transport, several key principles should be followed:

  1. Proper packaging: this is the first and most important step. Each delicate item should be individually secured with appropriate cushioning material, such as bubble wrap, polyethylene foam, corrugated cardboard, or special fillers. For very fragile items, it is advisable to consider double packaging.

  2. Strong collective packaging: individually packaged units should be placed in strong boxes or crates. It is important that the collective packaging is appropriately matched to the contents, minimising empty spaces that could cause the items to shift. Empty spaces should be filled with cushioning material.

  3. Proper securing of the cargo in the vehicle: the cargo must be securely placed and secured in the trailer to prevent it from shifting, overturning, or falling during transport. This is done using transport straps, anti-slip mats, spreader beams, and other specialist accessories.

  4. Cautious handling of the cargo: both during loading and unloading, special care should be taken. Delicate products should be handled with care, avoiding throwing, hitting, or dropping. Staff should be adequately trained in handling this type of cargo.

  5. Choosing the right vehicle: in some cases, particularly when transporting very delicate or valuable items, it might be advisable to consider using vehicles with air suspension, which better absorb shocks and vibrations.

  6. Route planning: whenever possible, routes with a lot of unevenness, bumps, or sharp bends should be avoided. A carefully planned route can significantly reduce the risk of damage.

  7. Cargo insurance: even with the utmost care, unforeseen situations can occur. Therefore, it is worth ensuring appropriate cargo insurance that will cover any losses in the event of damage.
