The RTV/Household Appliances industry presents unique challenges for transport companies. The transport of delicate electronic equipment and large household appliances requires not only efficient logistics but also appropriate securing of the goods. In this article, we present proven practices in road transport of RTV/Household Appliances that will help minimise the risk of damage and ensure timely delivery.

Proper securing of the load

RTV/Household Appliances are particularly sensitive to shocks, moisture, and sudden temperature changes. Therefore, a key element of transport is the proper securing of the load:

  • Dedicated packaging – each device should be packed in its original box filled with cushioning materials such asStyrofoam or foam

  • Securing systems – transport straps, anti-slip mats, and spreader beams prevent the movement of goods during transport

  • Load separators – allow for the safe transport of different types of equipment, preventing mutual damage

It is worth remembering that even the best-packaged goods can be damaged if not properly secured inside the vehicle.

Properly adapted fleet

Transporting RTV/Household Appliances requires specialised vehicles and trailers that provide safety and protection for often delicate and valuable loads. Here are the key elements of a well-adapted fleet:

Articulated vehicles

  • Driver assistance systems – modern tractors equipped with ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) minimise the risk of sudden braking or collisions

  • Eco-friendly Euro 6 engines – not only meet environmental requirements but also provide a smoother drive

Specialised trailers

Depending on the type of RTV/Household Appliances being transported, it is worth considering the following types of trailers:

  • XL curtain-sided trailers – ideal for transporting large quantities of RTV equipment. The XL certification guarantees a reinforced wall structure, increasing load safety. Examples: Krone Profi Liner or Schmitz Cargobull S.CS with the Multi Lock system enabling flexible load securing.

  • Jumbo trailers – with increased load capacity (up to 100m³), ideal for transporting light but bulky household appliances such as refrigerators or washing machines. Popular models are Kögel Mega or Schwarzmüller Mega.

  • Temperature-controlled trailers – some electronic devices require stable thermal conditions. Refrigerated trailers with temperature regulation (e.g., Schmitz Cargobull S.KO COOL or Krone Cool Liner) maintain a constant temperature range from +15°C to +25°C, which is optimal for electronic equipment.

  • Trailers with hydraulic floors – facilitate loading and unloading of heavy household appliances. The Knapen Moving Floor or Keith Walking Floor systems significantly improve the logistics process.

Additional equipment

  • Loading lifts – mounted on the rear of the trailers (e.g., Dhollandia or Bär Cargolift) with a lifting capacity of up to 2500 kg allow for safe loading and unloading of heavy household appliances

  • Internal securing systems – rails, hooks, and securing straps compliant with EN 12195-2 standards provide load stability

  • Air cushions – filling empty spaces between pallets, preventing the movement of goods

  • Double floors – enabling two-level loading, which is especially useful when transporting smaller RTV devices

Monitoring and fleet management

  • GPS monitoring system – allows real-time tracking of the route and condition of the shipment, with alert functions in case of unexpected stops or door openings

  • Temperature and humidity sensors – transmitting data in real-time about the conditions in the cargo space

  • Telematics – systems such as Transics or Webfleet Solutions offering comprehensive fleet management, driver behaviour analysis, and fuel consumption optimisation

  • Transport condition monitoring – shock and overload recorders (shock loggers) that detect potential threats to the load

Investing in a specialised fleet translates to higher service standards, reduced risk of complaints, and the ability to serve more demanding customers. Properly selected trailers and additional equipment not only increase transport safety but also enhance the operational efficiency of the company.

Competent staff

Even the best security measures cannot replace experienced personnel:

  • Loading and unloading procedures – clearly defined rules minimise the risk of damage

  • Ability to operate specialised equipment – e.g., forklifts or loading platforms

  • Knowledge of documentation – correctly completing waybills and insurance documents

Regular training and updating personnel knowledge are an investment that pays off quickly.

Insurance and liability

Transporting high-value equipment requires appropriate financial protection:

  • Comprehensive cargo insurance – tailored to the value of the transported equipment

  • Clearly defined liability conditions – both in contracts with clients and subcontractors

  • Claims procedures – quick and efficient handling of any damages

  • Photographic documentation – taking photos before loading and after unloading

Transparent liability rules build client trust and facilitate resolving disputes.

Collaboration with trusted partners

In the case of large volumes or unusual routes, it is worth considering collaboration with partners:

  • Proven subcontractors – companies with experience in transporting delicate goods

  • Transhipment centres – professional facilities with the appropriate equipment

  • Insurance companies – offering dedicated products for transporting high-value equipment

Building a network of trusted partners is a way to increase business reach without the need to invest in one's own infrastructure.

Summary

Road transport of RTV/Household Appliances is an activity that requires specialised knowledge and appropriate preparation. Implementing the good practices described above will not only minimise the risk of damage but also optimise costs and improve the quality of services provided. In a dynamically changing business environment, companies that prioritise quality and safety in transport gain a competitive advantage and the trust of clients.
